1) Have you received formal training in the arts? YES or NO
Where: I have not received any formal training. I paint but it’s a learn as you go type of deal….I have books on techniques and stuff
2) What do you think is “Southern” about Southern art?
The South is a place different from the rest of the country….it has a certain charm to it. The landscapes and the culture in general are different. I think Southern art reflects these qualities.
3) How is art benefitting to the community?
When I think of art I think of painting as well as other art forms such as dance, music, jewelry making, etc. I think art not only spreads awareness about other cultures (for example, the annual Choctaw Festival) but it also fosters creativity in adults and youth alike. Children and adolescents who are inspired to be more creative often have hobbies that keep them out of less desirable activities like drug use.
4) How often do you create artwork?
It depends on what a person considers art. I try to do something creative at least once a week whether it is painting, photography, or scrapbooking. I’m big into arts and crafts.
5) Who or what are your influences in making your art?
If I had to say who I would have to say my two grandmothers. My paternal grandmother is Native American and growing up she would teach me about making Native American works like jewelry and mandalas and my maternal grandmother always had a new project for us to work on. Now I use my imagination when I want to create something and I think of the skills and things they taught me when I was younger. If I hit a block and can’t come up with anything I turn to the internet until I find something I want to create.
6) Would you like to participate in a juried exhibition?
Not with my own creations but I think it would be cool to attend one to see how it all works!
7) If there were possible classes available for you to develop your own skills what would you take?
I would take some photography classes and maybe some arts and craft classes.
